At Rusty Belly Dance, each of us have an idol or a mentor that we look up to. Each dancer is inspired by the works of another dancer; we admire their style, their grace and their personality. Each week we'll be digging into the lives of the greats of Belly Dance, to give you a glimpse into their lives and performances.
This week we're looking at Suhaila Salimpour:
As the daughter of the pioneer dancer and instructor Jamila
Salimpour, Suhaila started her dance training at the tender age of two. Her
mother, founder of what is now known at the Suhaila Salimpour School of Belly
Dance, is credited with creating a teaching technique in which the focus was on
detailed breakdowns and standard terminology of movements. Suhaila not only
studied belly dance under her mother, but also ballet, jazz, tap, modern and
hip-hop. She started teaching at the age of 14 and since then, her career went
from strength to strength.

Suhaila created her own unique brand of dancing after
rewriting her mother’s book, “Jamila Salimpour’s Dance Manual. By introducing
elements from her training outside belly dance, she created an evolution which
maintains the purity of her mother’s original work, but also adds the
systematic and progressive methods found in classical dance. She acknowledges
her mother’s influence in her life and says that she loved the feeling she had
when she was dancing, as well as sharing that magical feeling when she danced
with her mother.
Her famous students include Rachel Brice, who has gone on to
create her own specific brand of Tribal Fusion (to be explored in a future
post.) Visit www.suhailainternational.com for more information on this amazing dancer.
